Hi Readers!

With the release of my new blog and community for women, Dandelion Lane, I have decided to do a bit of downsizing in my responsibilities and as a result I will no longer be posting on the YCP blog.

I will still be available for all of my photography commissions, but I will now be showcasing all Sneak Peeks and session photos on Yellow Chair Photograpy's Facebook Fan page.

So if you would like to stay up to date on all of the latest sessions, promotions, contests, and news click on our Facebook Fan box to the right of this posting and join in on the fun! I will also still be updating YCP's website on a regular basis for those of you would like to see full sized photos larger than Facebook will allow.

A Contest with Heart

I heard about this great contest and being that today is the 11^th anniversary of my mom’s death, I couldn’t pass up this opportunity to once again share my journey of the past 11 years:

My mom died very suddenly and unexpectedly from bacterial meningitis on St. Patrick’s Day in 1999. I was 21 at the time and to say that her death shook me to my very core and forever changed my life, and those of my brothers, would be an unnecessary understatement.

At the time of my mother’s death, I had not yet lost anyone who was close to me and still lived in a nice little bubble of happiness and innocence thinking that those we love would forever remain in our lives.

Still to this day, I cannot wrap my mind around the fact that I have been without my mom for 11 years. I miss our mom/daughter talks, our shopping expeditions, our road trips, her silly sense of humor, her creativity, her wisdom, her guidance, the scary stories she told at my childhood slumber parties, her chicken and dumplings, the sound of her voice, her naughty laughter, the way she would run her fingers through my hair when I was sick, how she would drag me unwillingly out of bed at 7am on a Saturday morning for some random adventure, I miss how utterly, unapologetically, without a doubt obsessed she was with Christmas, every year on my birthday I miss her horrible rendition of “Happy Birthday,” I miss her singing to the radio at the top of her lungs with the windows down, and most of all...I simply miss having a mom.

Since her death I continually rack up all of the things that “mom has missed.” Mom didn’t get to see either of my brothers graduate from high school. She never got to see either of them serving as proud military men. She never met my husband who I had just begun dating two months before she died - although, mom was dying to meet “that redhead”. I will always regret that Ryan never knew my mom.

My mom will never lay eyes on my children and they will never know her – this absolutely breaks my heart. Now, with all of the innocence of childhood, my heart breaks over and over again every time my oldest son asks, “Why don’t you have a mommy?” I explain that she died and is up in heaven. He then asks, “Do you miss your mommy?” If he only knew...

How, you may ask, does this “inspire” people? Through my work, I spend a lot of time educating my clients on the importance of capturing memories and everyday moments. I do my best to teach my clients that capturing these pieces of life is about passing along love and history to future generations.

One of my favorite clients, Renee, had been putting off a session with her three sons; after several e-mails it came out that a bad haircut was one of the causes of her procrastination. After explaining to her the importance of simply doing a session, no matter what, she gave in and was so happy that she did!

Camera shy or not, I know that Renee and her boys will cherish their images for years to come. This is one of my favorite images from Renee's session - Renee holding her sons' baby rings

I receive e-mails in many shapes and forms that mirror Renee's sentiment and I do my best to get across to my clients this: if you were to die today, and all your children had were images of you and them together - you with no makeup, a bad haircut, and sporting what you felt is an extra 10 lbs, your kids would not care. Period. All they would think is how much they cherish those last images of you and them together.

If this is the one thing that I teach my clients through my art, then I will feel that I have led a successful, inspiring career.

Wedding Discounts Thanks to Baby "Oops"!

The Documentary Session

I am announcing a new service called: The Documentary Session.

With the hectic pace of life often getting in the way, we don’t always take the time to focus on the “little moments” that truly form and make up our lives. Our Documentary Sessions allow you to capture the special moments that make up the day to day life of your family or the relationship with your loved one.

When you schedule a Documentary Session, you will receive up to four hours of coverage in your home. This is the perfect time to capture family traditions such as baking cookies, story time, a lazy weekend morning, and all the wonderful moments that make up your life together.

Documentary Sessions will produce approximately 40 professionally edited images and include the rate of a Proof CD of the edited images.

With all of the snow on the ground, I can't believe spring is almost here! I have already been receiving many inquiries for spring sessions and am now booking for them. So, if you want to get in a session before the summer heat hits, now is the time to book!

My brother Jake, who is in the Coast Guard, was recently home for a much needed visit. It had been a year since we had seen one another and his visit was wayyyy over due as far as this big sis was concerned. With my other brother currently deployed to the sand land of Iraq, I was in desperate need of some baby brother time! In these photos, Jake and I were out front enjoying the pre-snow beautiful weather and I shot a few photos of us. Being the wonderful brother that Jake is, when I said "smile," the following photos are what I got. By the end I had given up!

And as I was editing these image I wondered who held my face hostage and put all those lovely wrinkles there when I wasn't looking???? I seriously debated erasing them, but for the sake of honesty, you have me in all my natural glory!

:: Renee, Cody, Casey, and Chad

I will unashamedly say that this crew is one of my favorite families to photograph! I know that when I am around this family that there will never be a dull moment and as the session goes on, it will become increasingly difficult to keep a straight face.

I first met Renee when she booked a session for Cody and his girlfriend Sandra. Since then, I have come to know and love Renee like a surrogate mom of sorts. Renee's relationship with her children and her spirit remind me so much of my own mom and the boys remind me of my brothers that I am currently missing something fierce, compliments of dear ol' Uncle Sam.

Anyway...Renee wanted to do a family session that marked the different parts in her son's lives, from the time they were born (their baby rings) and Cody's Marine career to present day. Being the mother of two boys myself and the fact that this will be my first Christmas without either of my brothers while they are away serving in the military, this was an emotional session for me to edit. This session reminds me just what our loved ones sacrifice while they are serving their country and it also painfully shows me first hand that the growing up of our little boys happens way too fast. I feel so fortunate to be an honorary member of this ragtag crew's family and look forward to documenting their lives for many, many years to come!

I do believe that this is right after I asked for their "Blue Steel" look? Pretty close...

Out of these next four photos, I would be hard pressed to find a favorite. I love this photo because it so perfectly shows the "now" and "then" in Cody's life.

This photo gives me chills everytime I look at it. These dogtags were the pair that Cody placed in his boot when he served in Iraq. For those of you who aren't from a military family, these dogtags are placed in a soldier's boot so that if the worst happens, he can be identified. It hurts my heart to know that my own brother is currently walking around Iraq with a pair of his dogtags secured in his boot.

These rings all belonged to the boys when they were babies and Renee wanted to capture their tiny sweetness in contrast to the men that her boys have become. Again, don't know if I can choose a favorite...

Meet the super glamorous Lola and the silly Mr. Chase! It's been almost a year since I last took Chase's photos and I was so excited when I heard that Miss Lola would be making her modeling debut with none other than yours truly (and sporting a super fabulous tutu no less!) Feast your eyes on these little morsels of goodness! I dare you not to smile...

Mom, didn't you say that you are going to make one of these for Stella??? Just sayin'...

:: Fred and Bobbie ::

Fred and Bobbie's beautiful wedding was held at the scenic Silo in West Tulsa. For brides who are looking for a gorgeous, rustic setting, The Silo is it!

You all may remember Fred and Bobbie from their incredible Ghost Town and Fountain Trash the Dress sessions. Their October wedding was so beautiful, despite the frigid temperatures! Fred and Bobbie are both professional magicians and travel the world with their magic, so I knew when I booked their wedding that it would be unique in every way, and it was.

Yesterday when I was corresponding with Fred and Bobbie regarding their images, Bobbie told me how she had read in all of her wedding planning literature that brides should be careful not to become "friends" with their vendors in the case of something going wrong with the wedding. I am so glad that Bobbie threw caution to the wind and that over the past year we have become great friends! I wish Bobbie and Fred all the joy that life has to offer!

Now, on to the great photos!

Fred was so anxious to see his bride that we couldn't pry his eyes away from his phone before the First Look. While waiting for Bobbie, he wondered how soon after the wedding it was appropriate to change his Facebook status to "married." I think changing it at the wedding altar is now the norm!

Oh how I love First Looks! Such an intimate time between the bride and groom...

The Silo has so many great details throughout the property that I could have photographed Fred and Bobbie all day.

My favorite part of the ceremony was when Fred, Bobbie, and Fred's daughters had a "prayer circle." It was so moving and I adore this photo. Something about Fred's daughter's hand on her daddy's back melts my heart.

Fred and Bobbie had so many fun details throughout their wedding - this idea was by far my favorite. They created a silly questionnaire for their friends and family to fill out and it was so fun to see what people wrote!

Stunning cake by McNeill Manor! Donna definitely outdid herself on this amazing creation.

Bobbie is without a shadow of a doubt the most dedicated Republican I have ever met. One of her best friends who could not be at the wedding created a video that from what I remember had cut outs of President Obama and John McCain wearing a baseball hat...Bobbie was giddy when she was watching the video!

Brook & Heath

You may remember the beautiful Brook from her super amazing Bridal Glamour session that we did awhile back; last month I was so honored to photography Brook and Heath's Big Day!

Brook and Heath booked me almost a year ago and over the past year I really enjoyed getting to know them and felt so honored to be the one that they chose to chronicle their story of love. I think out of all of my brides, poor Brook had to endure more ups and downs in the planning of her wedding than any bride I have ever seen, but she handled everything with the utmost poise and always had a smile (even when someone broke into her house the week before her wedding and stole her wedding ring!)

On a side note, Brook and Heath knew very early on that photography was extremely important to them and they scheduled their whole wedding day around getting the best and most creative images. If you are a bride who feels this same way, the best advice I can give you is to start planning early on how you can make the most of your day and to get the best and most intimate images.

Brook and Heath, I am so happy for you and wish the two of you many years of love and happiness together!

There goes that Yellow Chair Photography gal again, making her brides get dressed outside... Believe it or not, this wasn't my idea - we were locked out of the church and Brook being the amazing bride that she is, got dressed in the church parking lot!

A wedding prayer...this is one of those moments that I truly feel blessed to be able to have a job where I get to witness moments such as this one.

The First Look. For those of you who may not be familiar with the First Look process and the importance of having a First Look, just a few words: First Looks are perfect for the bride and groom who want to make the most of their wedding day images! The First Look serves two main purposes: 1) It allows the bride and groom a few moments of true intimacy as they see one another for the first time. Without a First Look, the bride and groom will often not have any alone time at all until after the wedding day festivities have come to a close. 2) The First Look ensures that you have ample time for photos. By taking the majority of your Wedding Day images before the ceremony, you not only will have plenty of time for great images, you won't force your guest to wait up to two hours after the ceremony while you capture your Wedding Day images.

On the way to the reception, Brook and Heath wanted to make a detour to downtown to capture these fun and creative images!

For those of you that know Heath, this photo is so great because he is usually such a reserved kind of guy. I love to see Brook bring out this side in Heath!

Have I mentioned that Brook is such a great bride!? Part of capturing fun and creative images is that the bride and groom have to be willing to be silly and up for anything in front of the camera. Brook came up with several of her downtown poses on her own and I love how they turned out!

A note about the decorations and food - Brook's mom and family supplied all of the snacks, groom's pie tier, and decor for the reception! Brook and her mom began planning last year for this fall wedding and purchased tons of great finds at 90% off at Hobby Lobby! Brook's mom even grew lots of the floral decor and foliage herself at home to save money! This wedding truly looked like a professional wedding planner handled everything and was simply breathtaking. Brook's wedding just goes to show what you can accomplish for very little money when you plan ahead and think outside of the box!

:: The 918 Coupon Queen ~ Headshots ::

Sarah Roe, aka the 918 Coupon Queen, needed to update her headshots for her new website and other promotional material; so we trekked downtown and braved the 80 mph winds to capture these images!

If you haven’t heard of Sarah, then do yourself a favor and check out her website! She is truly the Queen of saving money and is going big places!

:: Sophia's Story and Sweet Karson's Debut ::

Although the focus of this session is supposed to be sweet Karson since this is her newborn session, I couldn't pass up this opportunity to educate about The Little Lighthouse. I am always surprised when I hear that some people still have not heard about this amazing school and the priceless gifts that they offer free of charge to the families who have children with special needs.

Before my first son's birth I volunteered for awhile at The Little Lighthouse and it was an unforgettable experience for me. To see children who have severe disabilities acting and playing like any other child was such a joy to watch. It was so fulfilling to see these children, who might now otherwise have the opportunity, blossom and thrive despite their sometimes life threatening disabilities.

Please take the time to read about Sophia's story. I hope that this will both educate you and build a desire to help The Little Lighthouse. Without the support of the Tulsa community and the many generous contributions, this amazing school would simply not exist.

Sophia's Story in her mom's words:

"On April 28, 2007 we went to the hospital to finally have our 2nd little girl, Sophia Grace. We quickly realized that Sophia was not crying and the nurses had a very concerned look on there faces as they discussed calling the NICU team. Sophia was not able to breath on her own. The NICU became our home for the next 9 days. Then when Sophia was 2 weeks old we were sent back to the hospital where Sophia was diagnosed with an encephlocele (a hole in the base of her skull between her pituitary and nasal cavity). We were informed by a neurosurgeon that it would have to be repaired when she was 2 or 3 years old.

At 4 weeks old we woke up to Sophia having seizures, later that day she was diagnosed with bacterial meningitis. Strong antibiotics were then started. Day by day she got stronger and finally 12 days later we were able to come home and we completed the rest of her IV antibiotics on our own.

We were then referred to Oklahoma City to a pediatric neurosurgeon. The craniotomy to repair the hole in her skull was needed sooner rather then later. On January 9, 2008 our baby girl went in to the operating room; what scared us most was the unknown - would she make it through surgery? Would she be the same little girl that we sent in?

At this point all that we could do is pray like we had never prayed before. Later we found out that we had a prayer chain that almost stretched from coast to coast. Sophia did great in surgery! The first 5 days were filled with ups and downs, but we made it through and were discharged 12 days later. However, Sophia did have delays after surgery; she didn't smile for the first 7 days and we didn't hear her sweet voice for another 7 days. One year later Sophia developed hydrocephalus and on February 25, 2009 a VP shunt was placed to remove the extra fluid on her brain. Sophia has made leaps and bounds but is still left with delays.

This leads us to where we are today. We recently began a new journey at The Little Lighthouse. The day that we have prayed for for 2 years finally came and we feel so fortunate to watch Sophia shine as she learns all that is possible. The Little Lighthouse is a Christian based school that is for children with a variety of developmental delays and needs.

The best part about The Little Lighthouse is that God sent the staff here to teach our children free of charge. At this time your donations and support of Sophia and all the other children are needed. To donate your time or money to support the children of The Little Lighthouse, you can visit their website to contribute to this very special cause. "

:: Slumber Parties with Kristi B. ::

Monday we held our bi-monthly Dandelion Network group meeting and Kristi B. with Slumber Parties was our hostess for the evening. I had never been to a real Slumber Party before and didn't really know what to expect!

Let me start by saying this Slumber Parties are very much an educational experience. Slumber Parties are not your typical women's parties where you are there strictly to buy product. The reason why I am such an advocate of these parties is that Kristi is so insanely knowledgeable about the female body. She is very patient and you would be shocked about the things you don't know about your own body! Even at the age of 32 and after two kids, she educated me on a couple of things that even I didn't know. More importantly, she explains the changes your body goes through after kids and as we age.

Slumber Parties has a wide variety of products for purchase and as Kristi puts it, "you can book your own party - from wild to mild!" Slumber Parties are great for bachelorette parties and so perfect for lingerie shopping. Kristi has a huge variety of lingerie that come in all sizes and styles. This week marks my 5th week of classes with Hillary, owner of Life Yoga. I am excited because I have anxiously been awaiting the time when I could begin taking classes twice per week! Hillary recently gained access to a private studio, so she will now be teaching Saturday classes at 9am in addition to her on location private classes. I am so thrilled for Hillary and also excited to begin class twice a week!

I have noticed that Yoga is following me around outside of classes. For the first time in my life, I am taking notice of my posture. We all know that our moms and grandmothers have always preached the importance of a good posture, but I never have thought much of it before now. Even when I am deep in the trenches of an editing spree, I can feel myself sitting with a straight and strong spine, where before I would have just been hunched over, with my head often resting supported by my hand - not the right thing to do.

I also have noticed that I find myself walking differently too. I can feel myself naturally walking taller and with my shoulders back and strong, where before, I never really thought much about how I walked.

Hillary and I were talking after class last week and she enlightened me about her first feelings about Yoga when she first began taking classes herself. She said that one day after one of her first classes, she discovered that Yoga "tricks you." It tricks you because during class you can be in the depths of a new pose and think you are dying, or want to die, but then after class you feel so great! It's funny how during Yoga I think to myself a hundred times that Hillary is intentionally holding poses too long and is intentionally making me suffer (and I mean that in the best way), but after class I feel so amazingly energized and happy that I made it through another class.

One last thing that I will share for this posting is that I researched how many calories you burn during a class with Hillary. Depending on how far you take the poses and what you put into your class, you can be burning between 350-500 calories per session! I told my husband that if I took classes daily, it would allow me to add a full extra meal to my day! He told me that the typical woman would be happy to know that those calories were helping her to lose weight - I am the only woman who would be happy to know that it would allow me to eat more! I disagree! I know that most women have dreams of eating chocolate to our heart's content (dark chocolate for me!) and not gaining weight! Just think - if you do Yoga daily, that would allow you to eat a candy bar daily and still lose weight. That's what I call a win/win situation!

Something hit me like a ton of bricks this afternoon and it so compelled me that I simply have to blog about it…

I am a photographer. Those words may seem blatantly obvious to my fans and clients, but to me, it is a fairly new realization. Yes, I know I have been blogging for the past 18 months and have paraded myself around as a “professional photographer,” but to be honest it felt like a sham. What gave me the permission to call myself a photographer? Most of what I know has been self taught, shown to me by my peers, or learned by simple trial and error. I didn’t have a degree that deemed me a “professional photographer,” so how could I call myself one? This is a question that I have asked myself over and over again over the past year…what makes me a photographer? When will I feel like I have earned the right to call myself a “professional photographer?”

An image that I took at Bobbie and Fred’s wedding over the weekend for some reason really stood out in my mind and is probably one of my favorite images of the day and maybe of all time (except for all of the images that contain the beautiful bride, of course!) And I don’t really know why, but this simple image makes me feel like a “real” photographer and that I have earned little photographer wings of a sort.

One of the detail shots that is often captured during a bride and groom’s big day is a photo of the bridal bouquets. I know that my fellow photographers and I always do our best to come up with creative concepts and strive to think outside of the box when capturing this image, but sometimes that is easier said than done.

This weekend when shooting Bobbie and Fred’s wedding at The Silo, an Ah-mazing property for weddings, I captured the image below. I don’t know why, but I love this image. I feel like it captures so much of who I am as a photographer in that I love to find beauty in unexpected places, even if they are abandoned, beat up merry go rounds, that don’t go ‘round any more…I love to surprise my clients with the unexpected, but especially love to find unexpected beauty in unexpected places. I just want to thank all of my clients that have given me the gift of being able to do this every day and I want to thank you all for making me feel like I finally have earned the right to call myself a “professional” photographer.

:: Life Yoga - Week Three ::

Today was my third class with Hillary Wright, Owner of Life Yoga. I am so excited to be blogging about my Life Yoga journey and marking my progress so that I can share the benefits of Yoga with so many people!

Class today was the best yet because I really could feel that my body was responding so well. I can notice such a progression from my first class up until now and it is more than encouraging! After the first class, I will admit that I was so sore for about 5 days. That is from the embarrassing fact that I have really not been nice to my body since the birth of the my first son almost 6 years ago (has it really been that long!?)

Then, after my second class the recovery time was brought down to only about 2-3 days. After only two classes I noticed such an amazing difference! For those of you who are fellow shutterbugs, you know the soreness and overall fatigue that sets in the day after shooting a full coverage wedding. Last weekend I shot the amazing Brook and Heath’s wedding and the next day woke up not feeling any of the usual aches and pains (even in my hands) that I normally feel after a full day of shooting! This was so encouraging and exciting for me that after only two classes, my body was already doing so great!

One thing I have also noticed since I have begun classes with Hillary is that I am more aware of my body for a lack of a better explanation. I am much more aware of my muscles (even the ones that I didn’t know existed until a few weeks ago!) and often find my self subconsciously stretching and wanting to do Yoga on my days when I don’t have class.

In two weeks I will be taking the jump from one class per week to two. I highly recommend for those of you who are new to Yoga to begin with only one class per week so that you can slowly allow your body to adjust to the idea of Yoga. I can’t wait until next week’s class!

:: My Own Rock Star Photo Shoot! ::

Last month the hubby and I trekked down to Ducan, OK for a photo shoot of our very own, by the oh so sweet and talented Abigail Smith. I rarely have the opportunity to get on the other side of the camera and I do have to say that it was fun doing the session with my smokin’ hot hubby! Although there are tons of great shots from this session, these are some of my favorites…and I can’t wait to begin using them on my websites and for promotional material!

This image definitely deserves an explanation! My very first concert was Loverboy when I was about 6 years old. I recently came into possession of some of my mom’s much cherished record collection and knew without a doubt that I just had to incorporate them into the session somehow. When I pulled out this album cover, I think Abigail actually blushed! She is a bit too young to know how awesome Loverboy was back in the day, but she was a good sport about putting up with my ideas!

Brook and Heath were married last night so I am now able to post these stunning Bridal Glamour images! We had so much fun shooting Brook’s Bridals and I am pretty sure that between Brook, myself, and my fearless assistant Lacy we broke at least 3 laws! Shhh…don’t tell…

Brook is always a joy to work with and I love her sense of adventure. When we began the session with Brook hanging about 20 feet in the air off of the side of a building, I knew we were going to have some unforgettable images! What you can’t tell from this shot is that Brook is hanging about 20 feet in the air and I am balanced precariously close to the edge of a drop off to get this shot. It was well worth risking life and limb to capture this fun image!

This blog posting if for Carissa who has reminding me many times over the past month that I have been sorely neglecting my YCP blog!

I am so sorry little blog that I have been overlooking you for my new "baby," Fine Art Boudoir Photography. I will do my best to pay more attention to you and to show some love!

Last week I began private Yoga lessons with the beautiful Hillary Wright, owner of Life Yoga. Before my beloved "S man" was born, I was an avid Yogi and embraced the power of Yoga. Sadly, after "S man's" birth, Yoga was left by the wayside along with many other fitness dreams...

A couple of months ago I met Hillary and was so inspired by the peace and overall good vibes that she exudes and knew without a doubt that she was the one that I have been waiting for to teach me Yoga! We set up a time for weekly private Yoga lessons and last week I began my Life Yoga journey. Hillary is such a patient teacher and never makes me feel bad for not being a bendy, Zen, Yoga prodigy (even after today's sad attempt at something that I will only describe as an elbow handstand!)

Hillary offers private Yoga instruction and will even teach to group Yoga. So if you have been wanting to get into Yoga, but were afraid of looking like a complete idiot in a huge class, then call up some of your friends and put together a private group lesson with Hillary. Trust me, you will have a blast and be amazed at what your body can do...Thanks Hilary!

Hi YCP blog family,

I know that I have seriously been neglecting my blog over the past couple of months, but trust me, it has been for a good cause!

I have been busily designing YCP's new and improved website, working on my new FAB website and blog, and hosting Fine Art Boudoir by ycp's first Fine Art Boudoir Rendezvous. As most of you may have noticed, I have made no secret about my love for boudoir photography. I am so excited to be one of Tulsa's first Fine Art Boudoir Photographers and simply can't wait to see what the launch of my new FAB site will bring!

Some of you may have noticed that I have been difficult to get ahold of or all together unreachable by e-mail over the past week. This is due to the fact that I am in the process of making some major changes for the better. Unfortunately though, I am having having to take the bad with the good!

At this time I am unable to send or receive e-mails through my info@yellowchairphotography.com e-mail address. Until all of the kinks are worked out with the new website and e-mail - please send all e-mails to sarahadams04@gmail.com. I will post another blog as soon as my YCP e-mail is once again alive and kickin'!

As I mentioned, this weekend was my first FAB Rendezvous session and it is the first of many unbelieveable FAB projects coming up in the next year - including a trip to France next year for an amazing FAB Rendezvous!!!!

Below is a sneak peek of one of the stunning images that I was able to capture over the weekend! There were 10 girls who participated in the Inn at the Price Tower FAB Rendezvous and to say that we all had a blast would be the biggest understatement of the year!

:: Ahna and Michael ::

Ahna and Michael wanted to capture some really intimate and artful photos of their pregnancy. After being turned away by several other local photographers who shied away from the fact that Ahna and Michael wanted some semi-nude photos, they found me. To be honest, I was surprised that there are photographers who would not want to capture such a beautiful session.

When I met with Ahna and Michael and they shared the vision for their session, I was so intrigued and couldn't wait to see what I could come up with! My goal for their session was to let the photos speak - to speak not only of the excitement and anticipation of a new life, but also of the love that Ahna and Michael share. I hope I captured all of these powerful emotions...

Ahna and Michael wanted to include this cross pendant of Michael's mom who passed away. I think this photo is so powerful...

Ahna wanted a photo to show how much her beautiful belly has grown. We were laughing at the fact that there is four feet of baby in her tummy!

I have really been enjoying my week of newborns and can't get enough of them - I hope that the opportunity to play with some sweet little bundles of joy comes up again soon!

Sweet Emily is so beautiful, but what can you expect when you have such a gorgeous older sister? Little Kate was definitely doing her best to deal with the new arrival to her household. I love the first photo where Kate is zoned out, off into her own little Kate world. All of you faithful blog followers will remember Kate from her adorable session awhile back.

Congrats to mom and dad for making two of the most adorable girls around!

I debated for awhile as to whether or not I should edit out the patches of skin on Emily's arms and decided that it is part of what makes a new baby so beautiful...

:: Taylor ::

So I was talking to my hubby awhile back and made a decision, if I don't start doing newborn sessions here and there I will not be able to shake this nagging little feeling in the back of my mind that I need to have another baby. The sane half of my brain, which is rather small these days, knows that a new baby for our family right now is not going to happen. But, the other side keeps whispering, "You could get a baby girl!" Shhhh! Someone tell that side to zip it!

Anyway, in the effort to quell the overwhelming urge to procreate, I have begun to accept a newborn session here and there. This session was my first newborn session in over a year and I had such a blast buying pink, pink, pink! Sweet Taylor was such a doll and was most cooperative. I do have to note though, that Taylor is not the typical newborn. While most newborns are curled up tight into cute little baby balls, Taylor was sprawled out as if she already owned the world - I love it!

It's a bird! It's a plane! No, it's super Ella!

This little firecracker without a doubt, no questions asked did not want to sit still for .2 seconds for a photo. I know that mom was beside herself and really had little faith that I would even capture one photo of the elusive Miss Ella.

Ella is a lady on the move. She has places to go and people to see and was much too impatient for the likes of mere mortals such as myself! I spent this entire session literally running my legs off in sheer determination that I would capture some gorgeous shots of this little cutie. Towards the end of the session, it became a game, that I very thankfully won! Feast your eyes on this darling little gal...

This shot is sheer heaven... I saw Ella clasp her hands together out of the corner of my eye and snapped away...this photo is what makes a woman like me (who has two boys) go all ooey gooey inside and dream sweet dreams that someday I will have a piece of heaven like this all of my own...

One thing I always find so incredible when I am editing photos is the hidden images contained in a subject's eyes. I came across this photo, zoomed in and immediately noticed mom's reflection in the catchlights of Ella's eyes. You can see also see the reflection of the building in front of Ella. I find the secrets hidden in the eyes so fascinating and may have to post more of these kinds of images!

: YCP - A Retrospective :

I sat back last week and realized that YCP has officially been in business for just over one year – how did that happen!?

When I took the leap to do photography full time, I never anticipated the opportunities that I would stumble upon or the amazing people I would meet along the way. During my sessions I love to make small talk with my clients and a lot of the time during these conversations the subject is brought up of how my journey into professional photography began.

For starters, I have loved photography my entire life. Period. It has been a love affair that has never failed me. This torrid affair with photography began when I received a camera for a Christmas gift – I was around 6 years old. I loved this camera with a passion and my parents couldn’t keep me supplied with enough film to feed my addiction! As I got older, my love for photography never wavered, but I never thought of it as a “real” profession. I can remember watching movies that would have high powered fashion photographers in them and simply drooling over their cameras and wishing that I could have that life for myself and then thinking that since I live in Tulsa, OK, that was not an option. All talented photographers were starving artists and lived in New York or California, right?

Then...while I was pregnant with our second bundle of joy, the mortgage bubble burst and the economy went into a downward spiral. At that time, my husband was in the mortgage industry and was paid 100% on commission. So here we were scared and broke with our second child...what to do??

An acquaintance of mine had just begun dabbling in the photography biz and had the same camera as me – my trusty Canon Rebel. When she started to see some level of success, the wheels began to turn in my head...I thought to myself “why can’t I do that?”

Well, my friends, I have never looked back and have attacked the photography business with an unapologetic vengeance and tenacity. In the past year I have created a network for Tulsa’s modern business woman, The Dandelion Network (blog soon to come!), been featured in or appeared in the Tulsa World, OffbeatBride.com, 918moms, and the 918CouponQueenBlog.com.

I want to extend a special thank you to all of those who have supported me along the way, mentored me, worked with me, been my cheerleaders and/or guinea pigs, and I want to extend a special and sincere thanks to my clients. My clients inspire me and encourage me to continually produce images that are outside of the proverbial box. Thank you to my clients who have gone with my crazy ideas without batting an eye! THANK YOU to everyone in the YCP family! And last but not least, thank you to my smokin’ hot husband who has put up with the 24/7 obsession that is YCP!

I almost forgot - please extend a warm welcome to Lacy who is the newest addition to the YCP family! Lacy has been hired on as my trusty assistant and will be seen with me deep in the YCP trenches. Thanks for your major kudos girl - I am so excited about the journey we are about to begin!

When I look back to the me that was about 25 years ago, I see a similar version of little Kayley. I was all tomboy, cowgirl boots, tree climbing, and as mischievous as the day was long - Kayley is all these things and more.

Kayley was the perfect model and she was a blast to work with! Of course my favorite photos are where she is rockin’ out on her little pink guitar. Special thanks to mom and Aunt Alicia for bringing out Kayley’s inner diva!

: Fred and Bobbie - The Fountain :

Fred and Bobbie’s fountain Trash the Dress Session was a session of firsts for me: the first time I have used this gorgeous fountain (something I have wanted to do for quite some time now), the first time I have been up to my neck in water with my prized Mark II, and the first time that I have been politely asked by a man in uniform to leave a fountain shoot.

Fred and Bobbie are such an amazing couple! They are one of those couples who are so intensely in love with one another that you are a bit blown away and you know without a doubt that God created them individually so that they could be together. If you can’t see the passion between these two – you are clearly blind!

Bobbie had her heart set on a fountain location for their TTD session and I was so excited when she chose my favorite local fountain! Bobbie and Fred are professional performers so I knew that I was in for some amazing images – Bobbie clearly knows how to work it for the camera.

Fred and Bobbie – thanks for making the TTD so much fun and for being such good sports when we were kicked out of the fountain!

Those of you who are faithful blog followers, you may remember this couple from a couple of months ago. Recently, I was lucky enough to work with them once again! I love Kyle and Diana, they have such an amazing energy and they are so ridiculously in love that you can't help but smile when they are around and have complete faith that insanely beautiful, can’t get enough of each other, true love really does exist!

: Russ and Lindsey - The Wedding :

What a wedding!

This is the last of my family weddings for the year and I have to say that I am a bit saddened by this thought. I had so much fun shooting Russ and Lindsey’s wedding and feel so honored that they entrusted me with their special day. And by me, I mean me alone! There was no second shooter on this wedding – I shot it solo and let me tell you I was on pins and needles the entire day. Thanks Russ and Lindsey for trusting that I could pull this off by myself, even when I had my doubts!

Russ and Lindsey’s Wedding was in Durant, OK at the Silverado Golf Course. The golf course was a beautiful, vibrant backdrop for the wedding images. Russ and Lindsey opted for a First Look and I adore the images we snapped before the ceremony! I LOVE Lindsey's Birdcage Veil that she got from BirdcageVeils.com! It is so elegant and feminine - I couldn't take enough photos of her in it! (Stay Tuned - More to come of these fabulous Birdcage Veils from BirdcageVeils.com!)

After the wedding, it was on to the goofiest wedding party photos in my portfolio. A side note, I am related to half of the wedding party, hence the fact that there is not really a straight face to be had after the wedding...

Russ and Lindsey opted for a First Look so we had plenty of time for some amazing, intimate photos. Right before Lindsey came out Russ said, “I hope I don’t lose it.” I think his expression says it all...

After Russ spent plenty of time admiring the gorgeous Lindsey, he then began fishing for compliments of his own, “How about me? How do I look???”

: Wyatt and Avery :

You know when you ask one of your little models to be if he is ready to take a few pictures and he vehemently replies, "NO thank you" it is going to make for an interesting session!

I always love a challenge and proudly claim that I can get any child to warm up to me so that we can get great photos, but Wyatt wins first prize for his single-handed determination to NOT take photos. At the beginning of the session, he was in full on pouty mode and wanted nothing to do with anything (except rabbit and roly poly hunting at full speed), but I am proud to say that we bonded by the railroad tracks in our joint goal of finding Thomas the Train. Score one for me!

: Pendergraft Concept Video - Finale :

Whew...what a month - I have been editing photos as fast as my little fingers can click my trusty mouse. I am beyond excited to finally post the finale of the TTD concept video with PenWeddings! We have Sarah Pendergraft to thank for the beauty contained in the video. She is truly the goddess of all things video :)

The photos below were all taken throughout the filming process. Once you watch the incredible concept video, you will see that the images tell a story. Thank you so much to Sarah of PenWeddings for inviting me to work with you on this simply spectacular project! I can’t wait to work on our upcoming project together next month, oops, did I let that slip??? Yep, another fabulous project is in the works and will debut on my little ol’ blog sometime in August. The only thing I can say is another smokin’ hot couple, and a really cool setting. Oh yeah, and did I mention that the couple are professional magicians, yeah, that’s right! My photo pal Chelsea and I will be shooting their amazing wedding in October and I am thrilled to shoot their TTD concept session while the incredible Sarah waves her videography magic wand!

And last but not least, THANK YOU to Megan and Colton for battling snakes, mosquitoes the size of Texas and an allergy attack not soon to be forgotten! I wish the two of you the best on your beautiful journey...

Jeff wanted some completely untraditional photos of his boys simply being boys. I think we captured just that! Take notice of the AMAZING blue eyes that all three of them are lucky enough to have. I did very little editing on them because they are stunning enough as is!

Believe it or not, this photo was taken next to a VAN! I happened upon two unbelievable vans, covered in unlikely items. I will post a blog later on showing both of the vans in all their glory!

: Pendergraft Concept Video - Take One :

Something that most of you may not know or realize is that I am extremely shy. I am one of those people who is a complete wallflower until I am forced to be brought out of my shell. I love clients that are the complete opposite of shy because it brings me away from the safety of my protected wall and brings out a side of my creativity that produces amazing results. Sarah and Rick Pendergraft from PenWeddings are two people who are outgoing and instantly put anyone at ease. As I have said before, I am in love with the love between this couple and I feel that they bring out a creative side in myself that excites me beyond words!

One day Sarah had one of those great "lightning bolt" ideas...you know, the ones that hit you like a ton of bricks and simply begs to be released... It was a vision for an incredible Trash the Dress concept video. After she divulged the details of the concept video, all I could say was WOW! When Sarah approached me about capturing still shots of the concept video I replied without hesitation "I'm IN!"

This video has been in the planning stages for so long and we were both so excited to finally see it come to fruition! I am doing my best to suppress my extremely impatient nature and attempting to wait to post the my images when Sarah completes the video so that we can have a debut of both the video and my images at the same time. SO, until then...I couldn't resist posting one of my favorite shots from the session. Let your mind wander as to what will follow...

: Diana and Kyle :

Diana and Kyle recently returned from three months of volunteer work in Calca, Peru. While in Peru, they were married and had a beautiful Peruvian wedding!

It was such a pleasure spending time with Diana and Kyle at their reception and getting to know them. These are two people that so obviously care about the world and the people in it. They are poised to do some amazing things and I can only imagine where life will take them.

Diana and Kyles' reception was great because of all of the wonderful items that they brought back from Peru and incorporated into the reception decorations. I loved the bright colors and bold patterns on everything!

I wish Diana and Kyle all the best and know that God will truly bless these two who bring so much to this world!

The little square on the right is a coaster that was brought back from Peru. The beautifully crafted pieces were placed on all of the tables as party favors and were SO bright and colorful!

The sign in book for the reception guests was also brought back from Peru - so unique!

These little guys were too cute! Diana told me that they are placed on top of most of the homes in Peru as a symbol of luck. I would love to know the story behind them!

The colorful throw that you see behind the candles is also another great find from Peru. I adore the bright colors of the fabric!

Around sunset, the bride and groom snuck out so that we could grab a few photos behind the reception lodge. The groom is doing his best to "stare vacantly into the distance" as he put it!

My best friend Carissa once asked me why I "cut the heads off of people." Well, in photos such as this I like to think that it not only portrays a level of intimacy, it also shows the couples hands up close. Someday their children will love this photo because it shows mom and dad up close and personal...

My new favorite T-Town band - the Paul Benjaman Band! They are superfantabulous (yeah, I went there) and I strongly recommend seeing them live if you have the chance!

: Rock 'n Roll Babies! :

I normally don't blog many postings of my kiddos, but I couldn't resist sharing these Rock 'n Roll inspired photos from our weekend shoot!

The "S man" had an idea months ago that he wanted to take Rock 'n Roll pictures and he requested that he "look just like Green Day." Since it was way past time for "Baby D's" one year photos, we loaded up the kids and went downtown for an awesome Rock 'n Roll inspired session!

As a mom, one of the reasons why I adore these photos of my kiddos is that they not only capture their personalities, but they also capture what my kids are "in" to right now.

Right now the "S man" is a true musician at heart and LOVES to "rock out" in his bedroom to the Jonas Brothers, Camp Rock, and music that dad and I love as well. On any given day, the "S man" will change his mind a million times a day about whether or not he wants to be a drummer, guitarist, or a "just a rock star" when he grows up. As a parent, I do everything in my power to encourage and grow his love for music.

For this session, it was the "S man's" idea to wear eye makeup "just like Green Day." Some parents might shy away from this, but why not? By indulging the "S man's" request, I not only captured photos that show exactly who he is right now, but I show him that I accept and appreciate what he loves.

As I tell all of my clients: DON'T BE AFRAID TO THINK OUTSIDE OF THE BOX! And DON'T BE AFRAID TO LET YOUR KIDDOS SHOW THEIR TRUE COLORS! Not only will you capture their true selves, you will have some great photos to show for it.

See a penny, pick it up and all day long you'll have good luck!

My cousin Brad just returned from studying abroad in Italy and was fortunate enough to live in an amazing village named Arezzo. While in Italy Brad was immersed in the Italian way of life and I grilled him every chance I got on the differences in the Italian and American cultures!

One the biggest differences between Italians and Americans that I noted (although there are many!) is the Italian view on food and nutrition versus the view of Americans.

Here are some interesting facts on the differences in Italian versus American foods:

1.) Did you know BY LAW all Italian food must be grown, produced, and manufactured in Europe so that they can maintain strict safety controls?

2.) BY LAW all food must be 100% organic and under no circumstances is anything artificial, such as dangerous chemicals or preservatives, allowed in Italian food.

3.) Although all of their food is SAFE, HEALTHY, and CHEMICAL FREE it costs around the same as shopping in the United States, yet does not cause cancer or any of the myriad of health problems that American food causes.

4.) In Italy no “convenience foods”, such as Hamburger Helper, which is full of sodium and artificial everything, is sold in their grocery stores.

5.) Any Italian citizen shopping at any local market knows exactly which city and farm their produce comes from because they care that much about their food.

6.) As if all of this is not scary enough, my cousin told me that for about the first month that American students are in Italy, they are very sick while their bodies “detox” and flush out all of the toxins that are found in the vast majority of our foods sold in our restaurants and grocery stores.

Because many Americans are starting to see the connection between many illnesses and diseases (such as cancer, ADHD, and asthma) that is directly caused by the foods we eat, there has been an awakening and many American families have made a commitment to natural eating.

While this sounds like a GREAT IDEA! The companies who manufacture the chemicals that are present in the vast majority of our non-organic foods are becoming nervous. Companies such as Tyson, Hormel and Kraft are losing money due to the newfound demand for natural foods.

Long story short, these companies are attempting to block organic foods in the United States.

For the sake of the health of you and your family, please take the time to stop by www.leavemyfoodalone.org and tell our government that it is no longer okay to allow these companies to poison our foods.

Although I love my country and am proud of the many freedoms that we have, I am saddened at things like this that have been allowed to happen simply so a few companies can make a profit. If this posting educates just a few of you, then I have done my job!

Several months ago my super awesome graphics designer pal created a ROCKIN' new logo for my still upcoming new site (yeah, yeah, yeah, good things come to those who wait right?). I have been so busy (which is a very good thing!) that I have yet to finish the design for my new site. And since I am not a woman know for my patience when it comes to thing like this - I can wait no longer!

So while my website and blog are in transition until the new designs are alive an kickin' I at least would like to enjoy the beauty of my new logo on my blog. When I first had the idea of designing a new logo and website, I wanted something that really focused on the modern feel of my photography - I think we captured just that.

: An Introduction of Sarah Pendergraft, Owner of PenWeddings :

Last summer when I was just beginning the photography biz, I had the pleasure of happening upon Sarah and Rick Pendergraft. At the time I had placed an ad on Craig's List because I was looking for volunteers to do a Trash the Dress style shoot and Sarah responded to the ad. Now let me tell you that when you place one of these ads, you never know who or what you are going to get; however, after I spoke to Sarah on the phone I immediately knew that things were going to be great and that we were going to have an awesome TTD! Sarah's vision for the TTD was to shoot at an abandoned farmhouse and I was more than on board with that idea. Sarah and Rick had no idea that I was SO nervous during the session and that I had NO clue yet what I was doing! They were so gracious and immediately put me at ease and we had an amazing TTD session. Rick is simply hilarious and I adore his sense of humor! Sarah is as sweet and kind as they come and I can say that I feel blessed to have them in my life in any shape or form.

About the same time that I began Yellow Chair Photography, Sarah and Rick were beginning PenWeddings. I was so excited to meet such an amazing couple and that they were on the same path - beginning a creative new business. Over the past year, Sarah and Rick have done AWESOME things in the videography world and I can't wait to reveal some top secret projects that we have in the works together!

Sarah is part of The Dandelion Network and this is her formal intro to the Yellow Chair family. And since her hubby Rick is feeling shamelessly left out of our "girl time," I couldn't resist including a few questions that specifically refer to him. I hope you enjoy getting to know Sarah!

Who: Sarah Pendergraft

What: Our wedding videos combine a photojournalistic and cinematic style. We offer two basic packages and a number of great extras like our video Love Stories, plus Trash The Dress and Bridal Elegance videos. The reason we don’t have a long list of packages is because we always shoot your preparations through to your reception… our packages are not divided up by the amount of time we’re with you. Our goal is to be observers who capture your day as it naturally unfolds.

Where: We currently offer videography to Oklahoma, Southeast Kansas, Southwest Missouri and Northwest Arkansas.

Why: We have both worked in media for years. I began working in television when I was 18-years-old, and Rick when he was 22. When we got married, like many couples, photography was at the top of our list and videography was one of those, "yeah we want it but it’s not a priority in the budget" items. We had a friend whom each of us had worked with at one point and we knew his production company did weddings. We hired him, not knowing what to expect. We were blown away by our own video, and suddenly it was just as important as photography, if not more... sorry Sarah ;-) We looked at each other and said, "We could do this! And we would love doing this!" And we really do.

What is your favorite part of any wedding?
"That moment." It’s different for every wedding… the first dance, when the groom sees the bride walk through the doors, or maybe when the bride is getting her hair done and she gets a phone call from her soon-to-be-husband just wanting to say "I love you." It’s such an important day all around, but there’s always a moment that stands out in your mind, where you know you’ve seen something special.

The best advice you can offer to a bride to be:
Plan, plan, plan… but then… enjoy! We’ve seen both ends of the spectrum. There are brides who are so busy running the big day that they forget to live the big day. Then there are those who do so little ahead of time that they end up completely stressed out the day of the wedding because no one knows when to do what where. Make sure your ducks are in a row before your wedding day, so on your big day you can soak it all in.

What was your first car?
Honda Civic… best part, the sunroof! I thought I was so cool.

What is your favorite chick flick and why?
As much as I normally go against the flow, I have to say "The Notebook." The story of their lives when they’re young is so much fun. And the scene when they’re older and she remembers for a moment, but then forgets again, is so gripping… especially the emotion you see in him.

What is your favorite smell?
Evening sunset. Okay, it’s more like a combination of smells. One of my favorite things in the world is to go out on my back porch on a nice evening, feel the setting sun on my face, and take deep breath after deep breath. I actually have a horrible sense of smell, so it may all be in my head, but I know I love it. That, and coffee beans.

And since I can’t resist give props to Rick – how did you know that he was "the One?"
I knew he was the one the moment I learned that he loved sushi as much as I do. Okay, not really… but it was a definite bonus. I have a very strong personality, and I realized early on in our relationship that Rick did – forgive me for being cliché –
make me "feel like a woman." When I’m with him I’m vulnerable and weak, in a good way… but my type A personality does still come out sometimes.

How do you feel about working with your husband?
I’ll admit that it took a little getting used to. When you’re capturing one of the most important days of someone’s life, and there are no do-overs, you’re going to have some intense moments. We figured out our workflow pretty quickly, though, and now we can just give each other a certain look from across the room and we know what the other is saying. It’s exciting too… since I shoot with the girls while they’re getting ready, and he with the guys, we often don’t see each other until the ceremony is close to starting, and even then it could be just a glimpse. Those little moments are a lot of fun, short as they may be.

: Kate :

Weeeeeeeeeee....

This session with sweet little Kate will always be one of my favorites and VERY hard to top! Aside from the fact that Kate is simply cute as a button and so adoringly free spirited, this session was special because it truly captures Kate’s spirit.

About two seconds after mom and I decided that we were “finished” with Kate’s 2nd piece of wardrobe, Kate decided that she had other plans. She rounded the corner of the building where we were shooting, took one look at the beckoning puddles, and DOVE right in!

This session gets an A+++ in my opinion for three reasons: 1) Mom arrived armed with an arsenal of awesomely patterned, brightly colored clothes for ME to choose what would look best for the session. 2) Mom also brought tons of toys, dress up items, and things that Kate loves to play with every day. I love it when parents put thought into it and add touches that really show who their child is in that particular moment in time. 3) Last but not least, mom was up for anything and was all for the puddle diving!

Without further ado...sweet Kate!

I LOVE this dress beyond words! It has all of the elements that make an amazing photograph – bright colors, great patterns and texture. If there is one piece of advice that that I can give my clients, it is that clothing makes the session! Muted, light colored, pieces of clothing with little or no pattern will not create the stunningly vibrant images that you see below.

Some of the best moments during the session happen during the breaks in shooting. This photo melts my heart...you can also see where Kate gets her stunning looks from!

Hands down, this is my FAVORITE PHOTO from the entire session!

All I have to say is thank God for diapers! Kate would stand up and fall down smack down on her bottom as hard as she could while screaming “WEEEEEEEEE” at the top of her little lungs!

On another note I do have to make an announcement of sorts – I will no longer be recommending Matilda Jane clothing to clients. Although I adore their clothing line beyond words, after several complaints from clients I will no longer use Matilda Jane as the referral of choice for clothing for my sessions. This makes me super sad, but I don’t want to recommend a company that is not going to take care of my clients like they should. If anyone else knows of a fun, creative line of clothes (a local company would be awesome!) please feel free to post a comment below or drop me an e-mail – thanks!

: Brook and Heath :

In October I will have the honor of photographing the wedding of this smokin' hot couple! I can say without a doubt that Brook and Heath are two of the sweetest people I have ever met in my life. Period. Brook is so adorable and I absolutely can't wait until her wedding to photograph her in her wedding gown!

For this session, we went to a couple of spots I haven't been to in awhile. For safety reasons, I try my best to stay out of alleys with my children/family sessions, but with the guns that Brook and Heath were both packing (and by guns I mean crazy arms of steel!) I had no fear of trolling the depths of downtown. I was so excited when I found the mirror in the alley that I was giddy! I have seen other photos create some pretty cool images using these mirrors, but have never been lucky enough to come across one. I LOVE the images that I got using the mirror!

Oh! I almost forgot! Sarah from PenWeddings joined me for this session. She was working on a Love Story for Brook and Heath and I can't wait to see the video of the sessoin that she has put together! Thanks for working with me on the session Sarah - can't wait to begin our next project!

Since one of my fav photographer pals has been showcased in the gallery for WordPress, she has been dealing with a LOT of copycats lately. One girl who lives in my friend's town was even brazen enough to steal my pal's intro paragraph word for word and posted it on her own blog! Others have stolen my pal's logo, her blog design, and just about any small detail that you can think of. We also have seen many of our fav photographers that we personally follow deal with the very same issue on their own blogs.

Although I know that in the photography community we constantly use one another for inspiration, poses for example, lots of photographers visit other photographers' blog/websites daily for pose and/or shoot location ideas. This is something that is practically unavoidable and what I consider very flattering. However, blatantly stealing other ideas, including outright plagiarism, in my opinion is not only wrong, but it is selling yourself short. It's like your mom used to say in school, you know the whole "If you cheat on a test, you are only cheating yourself." At the time you thought, "Yeah right!" But boy was mama right!

If a photographer's only was of expressing his/her creativity is to continually steal ideas from others, it is not only wrong, but will keep them from growing in any real way as an artist.

What, you may ask spurred this whole outpouring of words....well, I just happened to come across another photographer's site who I know often follows my work; over the past year, I have given her what advice and help that I could because she is a fan. I periodically check on her work to see how she is progressing and today saw on her blog that she has added the bio of a makeup artist to her blog. Although this in itself is no crime, what I do see as wrong is that she copied and pasted the questionnaire that I used for Chelsea of The Dandelion Network's intro on my blog. Of course I won't be mentioning any names, I just want to explain the reason behind this posting.

I will step down from my little soapbox now, but at least maybe I got a few people thinking...thanks for listening!

Each time I finish editing a session and send the password to my client, I have butterflies in my stomach. What if the client does not like their photos, what if I did not meet their artistic vision, what if the session was a complete flop in their eyes!? I always sit on pins and needles and obsessively check my e-mail until I receive feedback from the client telling me how much they love their photos!

Although I know that I can't please everyone all of the time (even though I want so desperately to do this every day!) I love it when I receive feedback from those who LOVE their photos. And I don't just mean love, I mean L-O-V-E, as in they cried when they saw them...that makes me giddy and makes me fall in love with my craft all over again.

: Joe and Tashia - Part Two :

I am sad to say that this is my last post from Joe and Tashia's wedding in sunny Mexico!

The day after their wedding we climbed over some bushes that seriously resembled giant bunches of broccoli and trespassed (ssshhhh!) onto some land to an amazing abandoned building. The contrasting colors of the building were PERFECT for some beyond fabulous black and white photos. Those of you who follow my work know that I rarely post black and white photos, but this post consists mainly of just that very thing. I think that when b&w is used to display emotion, that is tells a story like color cannot.

I had the best time shooting this destination wedding and can't wait until I get to do this again! One thing to note is that when people are planning a destination wedding they often look locally for photographers to use for their wedding. I can tell you firsthand that the good photographers are often very expensive. So instead of paying an arm and a leg to use a photographer who will only offer wedding coverage, why not use a local photographer from Tulsa so that you can get the most bang for your buck!? For example, using someone who will be with you for a couple of days surrounding your wedding will allow for amazing after the wedding sessions, such as Trash the Dress or Bridal Glamour.

: It's the End of the World As We Know It, and I Feel Fine :

Don't ask me why that REM song is running through my head as I type these words, but they are! I am not even really an REM fan, but there goes that song again...

Almost all of the photographers that I follow are east or west coast photographers. I love the pulse and dreamy, urban feel of their photography. I love how they can take life and make it more beautiful than we can imagine in our muddled memories. I love their vibrant colors, their creativity, their style, their passion, I LOVE how their clients so brazenly claim the sessions as their own by incorporating fabulous clothing and a rockin' ATTITUDE for their sessions.

After a lot of thought over the past few months I have made a decision about my photography business and have decided that I will no longer offer park settings as an option for my sessions. I have some very distinct visions of where I want my business to go and what I would like to focus on creatively - park settings do not mesh with these goals. I have not come to this decision lightly, mainly because I am a people pleaser - I hate to say no!

This decision is necessary for several reasons: I do not feel that park settings allow me to express my true creativity, nor does it express the direction I want my business to take. My creativity is best expressed in an enviroment that has a pulse, lots of textures and color, a life of its own, a story to tell, or one that helps to expresses emotion. Not to say that these things are not attainable in a park setting by anyone, they just are not attainable by little old me because my heart is not in it!

I have some very exciting things in my five year plan, this is one of them, and I cannot wait to see where the creative winds will take me! I just know that I have to follow my heart and this is a decision that my heart is telling me to make. I am sorry for those of you who are disappointed by this decision, but I know of two INCREDIBLE photographers who flourish in a park setting:

I recently returned from Playa Del Carmen Mexico from shooting my brother Joe's wedding to Tashia and have literally been working around the clock to get this posting up!

I am absolutely thrilled beyond words at the results of the photos from Joe and Tashia's wedding! Let me clarify that a bit...This wedding was the most techincally challenging shoot I have EVER done. The wind at the resort where we stayed was gusting about 20-30 mph at any given moment. Standing on the beach, I felt like my legs were being sandblasted! Between the wind gusting and the salt water dousing my camera during the ceremony, I was SO worried that I would be lucky to get ANY good shots much less several.

After the ceremony I was voicing my concerns about the shooting conditions and my dear brother said, "You know that your work is not good unless you worry about how it is going to turn out. That is usually your best stuff." What he doesn't know is that I obsess over any shoot on a given day, but this was definitely heightened by my shooting conditions.

The unique thing about shooting on the beach that day was that the clouds were moving so fast and changing the lighting non stop. Because of this, the look and feel of the evening is very different from shot to shot.

The next morning after the wedding (and way too many mohitos!) we did a Trash the Dress session on the beach and I can't wait to show those images! Stay tuned - the best is yet to come!

I love the vast difference between the world of the bride and the groom before the wedding. The bride is in control and knows exactly what is or should be going on. The groom and his guys, on the other hand, are often at a total loss as to what is going on! In this pic, Joe and Ryan are trying to figure out exactly how to pin Joe's rose on his shirt...classic groom in action.

This shot is for the groom! Joe wanted to dip Tashia during their official first kiss, but due to the INSANELY viscious wind, we opted to save this pose for after the ceremony to make sure that we had the perfect conditions to have an awesome shot. I think it was well worth the wait!

As sweet as a photo of two lovers kissing is, I personally think that the moments that lead up to a kiss are even better than the actual kiss.

This shot was suggested by my hubby, Ryan, and I can with 100% certainty tell you that I got sand in places that sand has never been before!

The resort where the wedding was held has a French pirate influence and these cute cannons are littered throughout the resort. We couldn't resist playing with them!

: Courtney and Dustin : We're NOT Engaged!!!!

The official title of this post is "We're NOT Engaged!!!!"

Courtney and Dustin wanted some photos for their dear mom for Mother's Day and they were absolutely cracking me up throughout the entire session! Courtney was very vocal about informing every person within a 10 mile radius that they are NOT engaged, they are brother and sister.

Courtney is a total diva in front of the camera and I most definitely have first dibs on shooting her wedding! Do you hear that girl!? These two remind me so much of me and my brothers and I had a total blast shooting their session. Can't wait to see what your sweet mom has to say about the pics :)

Courtney and Dustin's mom got them necklaces that say "I am blessed" and I love this shot of them. Even though I have never met their mom, it is so neat to feel the love that comes with these pieces of jewelry.

On to the FUN pics! When Courtney and Dustin said that they wanted to have some fun and crazy pics I smiled inside...I LOVE when I get to take pics like this!

I am BACK safe and sound from Mexico! Thankfully there are no signs of the dreaded Swine Flu in our house and I hope it stays that way! I am desperately behind in my blog posting and promise to do my best to get caught up over the next week or two.

The following session of the "H" family is one of my favorite family sessions to date. Mom and dad wanted to get some great family shots of life before their new baby girl blesses their lives and I love the outcome of the session! One of the best things about the session is the nine magical words that Kristen said right before the session, "I don't want our photos to look like Sears." HELLO!!! Did they come to the right place or what!? Not that I have anything against Sears, but I love it when a family gives me free reign to do whatever strikes me.

I know there are only five photos from this session, but I since I am playing catch up I am only going to be posting a few pics of each session until my big Mexico wedding posting!

Something SO exciting has been brewing behind the scenes here at YCP and I finally am able to share a bit of the super cool goodness with all of you!

I have been working on creating a network here in Tulsa that will focus on young, modern, creative women entrepreneurs that are the heartbeat of Tulsa. I am happy to announce that The Dandelion Network is now 10 strong with other members in the wings! (You can expect a posting later so that I can share the significance of the name with you all.)

My goal was to create an enviroment for women to help one another grow their creative service business and also to make some great friends along the way. The group will be a very active part in the Tulsa community and once we reach my personal goal of about 20 members, we will begin to add charity work in the Tulsa community as part of our group effort.

I am beyond happy to know that I have found a group of amazingly talented women who are equally as passionate about their work as I am. Over the next few weeks I will begin rolling out introductions of all of these fabulous women along with some photos of them. My goal is to really bring them into the YCP fold and to let them share with you rockin' tips that pertain to their professions. I should have known to go straight to hair school after I graduated high school, but the boyfriend at the time told me that I was 'too smart' to be a hairstylist. Yet, I was the one at age 10 that was tweezing my poor little sisters eyebrows (they were 4 and 5). They even paid for the haircuts that I gave them - a quarter. Those were the days, huh? The girls in school were always asking me to color their hair and when Homecoming and Prom rolled around, I always had updos to do, including my own at times!

What is your favorite Aveda product?
If I could choose the color line as a product I would because Aveda's color is so good for the hair. The permanent line is 97% derived from natural plants and the semi-permanent line is 99% natural. It just adds so much shine and moisture to the hair. It's a lot more complicated than other lines, but that's why you can create so many different colors.

What is the most important thing that every woman should know about her hair?
STOP washing your hair every day! It doesn't need it and nobody really pays that much attention to it anyways. I'm assuming that you have better things to do than blow your hair out and straighten it every single day, I know I do. Truthfully though, your scalp produces as much oil as it thinks you're going to remove. So if you've been washing your hair every day for the last 10 years, then try just going every 36 hours at first. It'll take a week or two, but your scalp WILL get used to it. Then try a full two days, experiment for me and see.

What is your biggest pet peeve?
Bad customer service. I have been in the restaurant business for almost 7 years now and in the salon for almost 4, but it never ceases to amazes me when I go out in public and see how businesses try to push their clients and guests away. Sometimes just slowing down, listening, and really paying attention are the most important things.

If you were stranded on a desert island, what one CD would you have to have with you?
Bob Marley. If I'm a desert island, I better do my best at relaxing and just taking it one good day at a time!

What is your favorite guilty pleasure?
A hot bubble bath, shampure candle and a glass of good red wine

One word:
Lipstick (it's important!)

What did you want to be when you grew up?
An artist and then a teacher and then a policeman, lawyer, accountant.....and I could just keep on. But I think I became what I wanted to be when I was 5. I get to create every single day and teach my guests how to recreate their look at home.

Ever tried Pop Rocks?
A few times, but not with cola....I heard that was a bad combo

What is your favorite beauty ritual?
Getting ready for bed. It takes me a good 10 or 15 minutes. And....6 facial products, 2 dental, and 1 body later, we're good! It's a little ridiculous how many products I really do use...I kind of have an addiction.

Chrissy : Fine Art Boudoir

I love this session for so many reasons...

Chrissy was very hesitant about doing a FAB session and had contacted me several times in the past couple of months debating whether or not she could go through with a FAB session. Like TOO many of us women, she was concerned about how she would overcome her self-consciousness to have a successful session.

I am beyond happy that Chrissy finally decided to take the leap and trusted that I would make her beautiful. Let's just say that the following results are stunning and after seeing these photos, no one in a million years could ever imagine how someone so beautiful could ever be self-conscious. And I can't end this session without saying it - this girl has the most beautiful lips I have ever seen!

PHOTO TIP - The first two photos are the exact same pose, I just cropped the second image and went about it from a different angle. I encourage all of you to try the same with your photography.

Lindsey and Russ : Before I Do

I am so excited to announce that this session was taken with my NEW camera! Just last week I received my new 5D Mark II, Mark as I affectionately refer to him as. Yes, my hubby should be jealous because if it were legal to marry your camera I would be well on my way to being Mrs. Mark II - sorry sugarbear... Seriously, I LOVE my new camera, it was love at first session!

This session concludes my week of family sessions. You may remember a few posts back that I did a rockin' Sweet Sixteen session with my gorgeous cousin, Ashleigh. Well, this week I am so excited to share with you the photos of Lindsey and my cousin Russ. They are going to be married in June and I will be taking the fam down to Durant to attend and photograph their wedding. I am super excited because my little rock star, Skyler is going to be the ring bearer and Ashleigh is a bridesmaid! It will be a blast to shoot!

Lindsey and Russ have been dating since they were 15 years old so I already feel like Lindsey is a part of our family. Lindsey is such a complete sweetheart and always a joy to be around I feel so fortunate to know that she will soon be joining our family and I that my Aunt Liz will be so happy to finally call Lindsey her daughter. See you guys in June, hope you love your pics!

So I am a serious Ellen fan and LOVE to watch her show whenever I get the chance. I recently began to DVR her show and listen to it playing in the background as I edit. Ellen is my hero because she does so many wonderful things for people and HOW can you be in a bad mood when you watch her show!? Anywho - Ellen recently started surprising viewers in need with surprise "Stimulus Packages" and as I watched one hilarious viewer last week who was literally beside herself when she saw the Gold Digger machine drive up to her house, I thought to myself...I wish I could do that...

Last week I sent out an e-mail announcing a booking cancellation that I had and I offered a session 1/2 off to the first one to book. I had an overwhelming response! That really got me thinking...I know that there are people who are lucky enough to not really feel much of a financial pinch during this economic crisis; but in our house, we are most definitely feeling it. And I know all too well that with kiddos in the house, for some families saving money right now is an absolute necessity. This necessity can cause some parents to forgoe photography sessions for their children. The thought of a family having a new baby, a little one who just had his first birthday, or a senior graduating from high school and not being able to afford quality photos just makes me want to cry!!!!

Although I cannot drive up to random Yellow Chair clients' homes and give away a new car or thousands of dollars, I CAN do something! With the economy being in, as I not so politically correct put it, the crapper, I created a little stimulus package all of my own.

Ashleigh : Sweet Sixteen

The best thing about being 16 is HAVING FUN! During her session, the gorgeous Miss Ashleigh not only did just that, but she rocked out some amazing photos in the process! For those of you who aren't in the know, Miss Ashleigh is my baby cousin; yes, I take all of the credit for the smokin' hot genes that she inherited from yours truly. In honor of Ashleigh's 16th birthday, my aunt asked me to do Ash's Sweet Sixteen pics and I have been looking forward to these babies for months now!

Let me say a word about Sweet Sixteen photos - this is such an important session that all too often gets overlooked! As parents, when our kiddos are little, we religiously take the obligatory photos on each birthday. But as the kids get older, these become few and far between.

A fun, no pressure Sweet Sixteen session is such a wonderful opportunity to capture the youth, the fun, hope, beauty, and all that is SWEET Sixteen! Now without further ado...here is the vibrant Miss Ashleigh!

Ash's dad is a true cowboy at heart. I hope that he loves these great pics of this country girl in the city!

When I was young I was an avid writer. I entered many writing contests and was actually lucky enough to win a few. I loved to write and still do to this day; I am a self-confessed word nerd. I am one of those people who likes the sounds of words themselves as well as their actual meaning. One of my all time favorite words is reverie. I absolutely without a doubt love the sound of the word rolling out of the mouth and also love the dreamy images that the word evokes in my little mind.

I recently was contacted by a local Tulsa author, Carla Stewart, who was lucky enough to have had her first book published (a secret dream of mine!) Carla needed a few shots for her new book A Dandelion Day; so we braved the windy day yesterday and managed to pull off a few great shots. It was so fascinating find out about both the writing and publishing process! Maybe I will use Carla's tips to publish something of my own someday...

A Very Personal Blog Posting:

Next Tuesday, March 17th marks the 10th anniversary of my mom’s death and since the best way I know how to deal with anything is to write out my feelings – buckle up your seatbelt because here goes...

For those of you that may not know the story, March 17th, 1999 my mom died very suddenly from Bacterial Meningitis. Although no loss is ever easy, I was completely blindsided. Up until my mom’s death, I had not lost anyone in my family that I was close to. I was 21 when mom died and my poor brothers were only 13 and 14 - to say that her death hit me hard would be a complete understatement. But I can only imagine what my poor brothers went through living life at such a young age without their mom. Around this time is when I met my Best Friend, Carissa, and she honestly carried me through my first year without my mom. I absolutely could not have made it through that time with her - thank you Carissa so much for being such an amazing friend and shoulder to lean on.

I still cannot wrap my mind around the fact that I have been without my mom for 10 years. I miss our mom/daughter talks, our shopping expeditions, our road trips, her silly sense of humor, her creativity, her wisdom, her guidance, the scary stories she told at my childhood slumber parties, her chicken and dumplings, the sound of her voice, her naughty laughter, the way she would run her fingers through my hair when I was sick, how she would drag me unwillingly out of bed at 7am on a Saturday morning for some random adventure, I miss how utterly, unapologetically, without a doubt obsessed she was with Christmas, every year on my birthday I miss her horrible rendition of “Happy Birthday,” I miss her singing to the radio at the top of her lungs with the windows down, and most of all...I simply miss having a mom.

Since her death I continually rack up all of the things that “mom has missed.” Mom didn’t get to see either of my brothers graduate from high school. She never got to see either of them as proud military men. She never met my husband who I had just begun dating two months before she died - although, mom was dying to meet “that redhead” I was dating, but I had a strong rule that I never brought anyone home until I deemed it “serious.” I will always regret that Ryan never knew my mom.

My mom will never lay eyes on my children and they will never know her – this absolutely breaks my heart and was the cause of many nights of crying myself to sleep after "S man" was born. Now, with all of the innocence of childhood, my heart breaks over and over again every time "S man" asks, “Why don’t you have a mommy?” I explain that she died and is up in heaven. "S man" then asks, “Do you miss your mommy?” If he only knew...

I hope that in reading my story, if nothing else, that you will call your mom today and tell her how much you love her and how grateful you are for all of the wonderful things she had done in your life. Don’t ever waste an opportunity to tell someone you care about how much you love them. Trust me, like the saying goes, “Life if too short.

And for those of you who wonder about the afterlife, questions like is my loved one still around me somehow? Listen to this: Music is BIG in our family and was very much so with my mom. As I sit here typing this message to all of my friends, family, and to my treasured Yellow Chair family I have been listening to my beloved Pandora music station. Just now as I was closing my message with the above paragraph, two songs I have NEVER heard play on Pandora that have such a personal connection for me to my mom just played. One is a song from the movie Hope Floats; my mom gave me this movie the Christmas before she died and I watch it every time I miss her. Then, right after that song was the theme song from the movie Titanic – another movie that I watched over and over with my mom and it ties me very tightly to her. Not to mention that Sarah McLachlan was the last CD that my mom bought before she died - literally almost every Sarah McLachlan song I have ever heard has played in the time it has taken me to type this posting.

I know without a doubt that mom was sitting here right next to me as I typed these words to you all...think about it...

This is one of my favorite photos of my mom when she was young. I totally LOVE the hippie look and without a doubt, this photo shows just how much I look like my mom.

As a mom myself I can now understand the love that my mom had for me...

I love this Halloween photo of my mom (in the cowboy hat). This was taken in front of the Grand Ole Opry in OKC. As a child I had a cousin how would often perform there and I love the feel of the old theater!

This photo was taken the Christmas before my mom died. It is the last photo of the four of us. And yes, my hair was RED!

Six months before my mom's death, we took a super fabulous two week long trip to Scotland and London. One of her major goals of the trip was to take the "Beatles Tour." Here she strutting her stuff across the famed Abbey Road. She was a HUGE Beatles fan.

This is in front of the studio that the Beatles recorded in. She was "in love" with John Lennon as a young hippie chick and couldn't resist this photo. John also happens to be my dad's name...she was a smart lady!

This is one of my last photos with my mom and also one of my most treasured. It was taken on Loch Ness in Scotland. In case you are wondering what was in the cups...whiskey of course! We became quite the whiskey connoisseurs on our trip.

I am back in the saddle again. This week officially kicks off the start of the 2009 season and I am more than ready to knock out some killer sessions this year! Let me begin this posting by thanking all of my clients who have been so understanding this week since I have been down with what I not so affectionately am calling "the plague." I am a bit behind on postings, orders, e-mails and such due to the fact that my whole family was hit with the plague over the past 10 days. I have been not so happily chained to the couch for the past four days while my AMAZING husband has taken care of the kiddies and the house. Let's just say that Skyler is not too upset that I am plague-ridden considering he has gotten to eat out almost every night this week! Anway, I can't wait to feel better and get back to some rockin' sessions that are coming up!

This is a Valentine's Day wedding that I assisted with my dear friend and fellow camera bug Chelsea Beck. The wedding was held at St. Therese Catholic Church in Collinsville and I have to admit that I was awestruck at how such a gorgeous church could be tucked away in the middle of nowhere! For those of you who can appreciate the beauty of photography with lots of natural light, this was like winning the natural light lottery!

Thomas and Kelly were the most beautiful couple and so obviously in love that it made my job so easy. I have to admit that I struggled with what photos to include on this blog posting because quite frankly I wanted to include them all! Enjoy...

One thing that made photographing this wedding so much fun was all of the small details that were scattered throughout

One of the biggest questions/concerns from brides is whether or not to go for the "first look." As a photographer I am a huge fan of them because they give me such a good opportunity to get some intimate shots that would never be possible in during the ceremony. As the romantic, they are so much fun to watch unfold. I loved how Thomas was stading at the alter so serious, in anticipation and how his face lit up when she began walking down the aisle towards him.

I was touched by watching the Priest silently standing by and taking in all of his surroundings. I caught this photo as he was watching the guests enter the church.

This is one of my favorite photos from the wedding. Throughout the ceremony Chelsea and I were plagued by this pesky patch of light that was literally pouring in one of the windows. At one point, I finally decided to embrace it and have some fun with it rather than fight it. I love the results...

Fine Art Boudoir Mini Sessions

Hi Ladies!

I am considering holding some mini Fine Art Boudoir Sessions at the FABULOUS Inn at Price Tower in Bartlesville, OK and would like to see how many women would be interested in participating.

Here are the tentative details:

Date: Saturday, March 7th

Session: Each session would be 45 minutes in length and would produce 15 Fine Art Boudoir Images. All sessions would be held in one of the historic 2 Story Tower Suites

Package Options: There are three different package options from which to choose:

Option 1 – $139.00 (includes one 5x7)
Option 2 – $229.00 (includes 4x6’s of the entire session)
Option 3 – $329.00 (includes Fine Art Boudoir Image Box and 6 mounted 5x7’s with an easel for display)

I will need at least 6 women (so far I have 2 who have voiced interest) to book for this to happen. So if you know of anyone who is interested in a Fine Art Boudoir Session, this is the perfect opportunity to book! Not only will you have an affordable session, but it will be held in a historical yet, modern setting.

Fine Art Boudoir Session Debut!

I have had so many requests from clients for Boudoir Sessions that I have FINALLY added this great new session category to my services - hip hip hooray! Yes, I said hip hip hooray! There are so many things that I could say about my Boudoir Sessions, such as sexy, smokin' hot, etc, but this is a "family" site right????

A little about my approach to my Fine Art Boudoir Sessions...First, notice that I said "Fine Art". My Fine Art Boudoir Sessions have a definite edge, as does all of my work, but at heart my Fine Art Boudoir Sessions are artistic in nature - they are classic and tasteful. In addition, I believe in accentuating the positive rather than the negative that we women never cease to see in ourselves. Gentle editing techniques will be used to remove a good portion of the little things that women often stress about. Thanks to the joys of Photoshop, my clients will be able to enjoy the session rather than worry about whether or not they are going to look good!

Oh yeah, I almost forgot!!!! The super fabulous Chelsea from Wild Magnolia Artistry joined me for this session! Thanks for the rockin' eyelashes Chelsea!

The Best Things in Life Are Free!

Can we say that this week has been an eventful one for our country or what? I have to admit that I am a self-confessed CNN addict. When there are monumental goings-on, such as the inauguration, I am like a moth to a flame. I sit for hours in front of the TV transfixed on each reporter's every word, unable to look away. Is there a program that can help me with this problem?

Despite the fact that I should be focused on the fact that Barack Obama is the first African American president, I am fixated on what he and his family must be going through this week. Ryan made the comment that while mom and dad were stepping out to 10 inaugural balls, the Obama girls were having to spend their first night in a BIG, new house all alone without mom and dad to allay their fears. As a parent, I cannot image how difficult it is for our new President to deal with the struggles of not only being a parent, but also the President of the United States...

My cousin Brad is currently studying abroad in Italy, which is completely unfair if I do say so myself! But he has had the unique perspective of being an American in Italy during the most historical inauguration of our time. I enjoy hearing the different thoughts of the Italian people. As a people, the Italians are in awe of this election and so hopeful that we will embrace our new President and what he represents. I hope that happens too!

And by the way, let me just say that we Americans with our 50+ hours of work each week and only 1-2 weeks of vacation per year are MISSING OUT!!!! Brad has Fridays off from his studies because Italians "don't believe in having school on Fridays"... then you think about the 4-6 weeks of paid "holiday" they receive each year and you wonder how we all became so power driven and work obsessed.... How did America come to this????

Anyway, as usual I am completely straying from the original purpose of this posting...what can I say? My blog ADD always gets the best of me!

The Golden Rule...

I was talking to my sister-in-law yesterday and she was telling me how she had contacted another photographer to do a session (a secret session - that's why she didn't use me!) And the other photographer never responded to her e-mail. My first thought was HOW RUDE!! My second thought was thank God I am not that type of photographer! I can say with 100% certainty that I do my absolute best to follow the old Golden Rule, you know, "treat others as you would want to be treated." I am sure I am not the only one who has noticed, but we unfortunately live in a world where genuine, one-on-one, customer service is a dying practice and I make it my daily mission to swim against this ever growing current in our society.

After I opened one of my e-mails yesterday from a new client I was greeted with the following: "I can tell you work hard at what you do! That is a rare find these days!"

Upon reading those words I sat at my computer for a few minutes and reread the lines my client had written, seemingly simple enough. Right? But the impact that those two sentences had on me was huge. These words were from a client who I have not even photographed yet, she has only set up a couple of sessions. If she thinks these thoughts about me before she has even truly had the chance to work with me, then I MUST be doing something right! Hooray for me!!!! Thanks to all of my clients who send similar compliments my way. Not only do your words give me that warm and fuzzy feeling inside, they reinforce that I am doing things exactly as I should be doing them....

Anway, on to what this post is really about...

I can't tell you all how much I love the FedEx guy. Well, not him personally, but I LOVE it when he hops out of his big ol' truck and high tails it to my front door with an order! Thanks Mr. FedEx man!!!!

Last week I got in a couple of Aluminum Art orders and simply could NOT resist sharing them with you all! Aluminum Art is my favorite product that I carry - by far. If I could, I would fill every square inch of my home with this unique and sassy product. Yes, I said sassy!

As you can see by the two examples below, Aluminum Art is perfect for Trash the Dress sessions and also any sessions that are in an urban setting. Some brides even use them for bridal or engagement photos to be displayed at the wedding reception. What's the Deal With "Yellow Chair?"

Since this is one of my most asked questions, I thought I would once again share the story of how "Yellow Chair" came about!

On one of our family trips to Florida, an old beat up wooden yellow chair was on our balcony. I was obessesed with getting "just the right" shot of this weather-battered chair. I spent nearly half an hour arranging and positioning the chair on the deck outside of our bedroom window to get the best shot. This photo that you see (though not the whole view) is my favorite photo by far of the old yellow chair.

When I was searching for a name for my photography business I came across this photo and thus the name Yellow Chair Photography was born! This chair is a good representation of my photography style in that I believe that beauty can be found in the most unlikely of places.

My high school creative writing teacher used describe vignettes as "little slices of life." I believe that the yellow chair is a vignette in all its worn and rusted glory.

Shade vs. Sun {PhotoTip}

One thing I hear from clients all the time is "Why can't I take great photos of my kids?" Well, the answer is that there is no reason why you shouldn't be able to take great photos of your kiddos. You not only have them at your disposal at all times, but you know them better than anyone else. So, in honor of those of you who would like to learn the ins and outs of taking great photos of your loved ones, I have started a Photo Tips series. I am by no means claiming to be a little Miss Know It All (even though at times my husband will disagree with this), but I do hope to help you all capture those precious moments with your loved ones.

Something you may not pay much attention to when you take a photo is whether or not your subject is in the shade or sun. Sounds simple right? It is. Shade vs. Sun can make an astounding difference in the outcome of your photo.

For this example, I used my super good looking offspring to demonstrate one of the most often overlooked things when one is snapping photos of their loved ones. No, I am not biased, it is a proven fact that Skyler is super good looking! Maybe it is because he looks just like his mom? Lucky guy...

Anyway - we went out to our front yard on a perfectly sunny day around 2pm. Here, Skyler is facing towards the sun and very visibly uncomfortable and more than a little squinchy eyed (yes, that is my own little technical term!)

Now, here is my super cute little man (again, no bias at all) sitting happily in the shade.

Notice the HUGE difference in the two photos?? In the sun photo you cannot even see the poor little guy's eyes because he is squinting so badly at the sun. To avoid the squinchy eyes, I simply moved to the other side of the very same tree and sat him on the ground, up against the tree, rather than standing in the tree facing the sun.

If you start to pay attention to this small detail and actively look for shady spots to take photos of your loved ones, you will notice a difference in the outcome of your photos. The best kept secret of photographers is using the side of any building or tree shade. Except for right around noon time any building will always have a side that is in the shade.

So grab an unsuspecting subject next time we have some nice weather and give it a go!

Christiaan and Adair {Wedding}

There is so much that I could say about this wedding and the people involved, but I will start with the description of "colorful". This description is really meant for Adair more than anything, but it is the first thing that came to mind...

Adair is one of the most vibrant people on this planet! Not to mention, any bride who wears a pink and blue wedding dress is a true rock star in my book! There were so many fun details that went in this wedding; one of my favorites were the handmade flowers that adorned the beautiful Adair's hair and were found throughout the wedding.

It was so hard to choose my favorites to share on my blog because this wedding was right up this little ol' photographer's alley! First of all, I love it when I don't have to direct my subjects; the bride and groom and their partners in crime happily mugged for the camera and were up for anything. I loved it! Second, there were so many personal touches throughout the wedding. Last but not least, I LOVE the bright colors that were chosen!

Christiaan and Adair - Thank you so much for entrusting me with your precious memories...I hope you enjoy this sneak peek of your day!

This shot was a complete accident and almost hit the recycle bin. On a whim, I tried it in black and white - this is by far one of my favorite shots of the entire day. I can't believe the poise that Adair exuded throughout the day. She was truly the epitome of grace under pressure!

Remember when I said that this crew loved the camera??? I rest my case!

Dr. Seuss's book "Oh the Places You'll Go" was placed on one of the tables during the reception for friends and family to send their best wishes and congrats. I thought this was a great touch! Thanks to my partner in crime Chelsea for catching sight of this book as we were walking out the door!

5x7 Photo Display Ideas

I often have clients ask me for tips on how to display photos. In addition, some clients feel because they have small homes and lack of wallspace they can't order very many prints from their sessions. I thought since I have had so many questions/comments regarding this topic that I would start offering some tips on how to display photos in your home.

Here is an example from my own home - these photos that you see framed are all 5x7's. We each have our own frames - one of Ryan and me and individual frames of Skyler and Declan.

I am a bargain shopper, so I always wait until Hobby Lobby has 50% off of their frames. To be in the know with Hobby Lobby, go to their website and sign up for their newsletter. Not only will you be notified of their weekly sales, you will receive their 40% off coupons that they e-mail on a regular basis.

I was able to score the above pictured three frames, holding a total of 9 5x7's, for only $59.97. That isn't bad for three fully matted frames! If you were to have a similar "professional" frame made with the same configuration, you would spend well over $100 for each frame.

Goodbye Christmas - Here Comes the New Year!

Can you believe that Christmas has already come and gone???? I hope that everyone had a blessed and magical Christmas holiday. I know that this Christmas season was quite eventful in our house and full of Christmas magic. Even though it has only been days since Christmas, I am already in anticipation of Christmas 2009! I was going through our Christmas photos and came across a few more that I couldn't resist posting...

This year at "S man's" school Christmas party they sang "Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer" and "S man's" line that he proudly belted out was "like Pinnochio." He was too cute in his antlers and red nose!

In this photo, "Baby D" is "opening" his first present! I love his little orange nose in this photo! Around this age, "S man's" nose was also orange from all of the orange baby food that he loved - thanks Gerber.

Dana, we miss you already!

The Yellow Chair Sanctuary - A Place of Refuge...

Dictionary.com defines Sanctuary as "A place of refuge."

Here is my story and what I can offer to families who have loved ones with a terminal illness...

My own mother died when I was only 21 years old. Although it has been a decade since her death, I still feel it so completely at times that I cannot believe how much time has passed. Sometimes the pain is still unbearable. Every day I think of the wonderful things that she has missed: meeting my husband, the birth of my children, and all of the mundane day to day things you want your mom to know about. A trip to the mall is still agony as I watch all of the other women shopping with their moms...why can't that be me???

My mom died suddenly from bacterial meningitis. I know what you're thinking, "Adults die from that???" Yes, they can and yes they do. The one thing that I have often wondered since her death is what if we had known she was going to die? What if we had those precious last moments to say our good-byes and grab a few irreplaceable photographs? Would it have made her death any easier? Who knows...

By creating The Yellow Chair Sanctuary, I am hoping to offer families who have a loved one suffering from a terminal illness treasured memories that they might not otherwise receive.
What can I do to help??? I will donate a FREE family session to a family in need and hand over the fully edited images from the entire session.

My hope is that by doing this that I can offer treasured photographs as a place of refuge when the unthinkable happens. Please contact me if you would like to set up a Yellow Chair Sanctuary session.
